About Marton Gyori

Marton's work is imbued with a sense of joie de vivre in the manner of the early works of Matisse or Delaunay, and he too, is an artist for whom painting is above all the expression of a spontaneous life force, and as such, is a source of contentment and joy.

The young artist (born 1979) is a 21st century devotee of the great Modernist tradition. The works being unveiled in his exhibition at Espace GAIA are predominantly still lives, or still life paraphrases, and again, following in the footsteps of his historical forebears, he takes great pleasure in the depiction of mundane, everyday objects.

Like most proponents of absolute painting who have been enthralled by the great Modernist way of thinking, Márton is seldom concerned with literary subjects, esoteric symbols, and nor does he have much affinity for coded signs or allegories. His colourful large-scale acrylic and oil paintings balance on the limit between figuration and abstraction and they bear witness to the physical beauty of painting. The lusciousness of the full colours, the strength of their varied contrasts, their alternately matt and glossy textures, their high impasto, the immediacy of the brush-, spatula- and hand-strokes inform the viewer of the bodily strength involved in the process of painting, something that in today's age of digital photo development and the Photoshop revolution, one no longer has the regular pleasure of experiencing.
